“Gratitude is the Gateway to …” I just typed that phrases into my search engine and here were some of the results:

  • “Gratitude is the Gateway to Abundance.”
  • “Gratitude is the Gateway to Optimism.”
  • “Gratitude – the Gateway to Peace.”
  • “Gratitude: Gateway to the Extraordinary.”
  • “Gratitude is a gateway to happiness.”

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is a worthy pursuit with wonderful benefits, as shown in the quotes above. But how can you go about cultivating gratitude in a practical way? That has been my question for years and I’ve tried a variety of things with a variety of results. Here are 3 fast gratitude games that I enjoy.

  1. The Gratitude ABCs – Go though the alphabet and think of something that starts with each letter. When I play this by myself, it’s a speed game. When I play it with my family, we all think of something that starts with each letter before moving on to the next. This game makes a great family activity during dinner, while driving in the car, or as part of a special family night.
  2. Thank you for … – Thank everything that supports you in any way. Look around wherever you are right now and thank your body for breathing and seeing and moving, thank your cup for holding water, thank your house for providing you shelter. It may sound silly, but try it! It feels wonderful!
  3. “Isn’t is great that …” – This is a fill in the blank game. You start by looking around and filling in the blank with things that you see that you are grateful for. So right now I would say, “Isn’t it great that I have a nice laptop to work on? Isn’t it so nice that I have a beautiful water bottle that I love to carry around with me? Isn’t it great that I have a good essential oil diffuser?” After just a few times of doing this, I often break from the phrase so, I might say, “It’s so funny how my 4-year-old calls the diffuser a confuser. And I love the trees outside my window. I’m so grateful for the rain today. I just had such a nice lunch.” Etc., etc.
